5 Best Indian Restaurants In Hanoi to Satisfy Your Cravings

  • Authenticity and Flavor Profiles: We looked for kitchens that stay true to traditional spice blends rather than watering things down for tourists. Each spot was checked for its commitment to classic cooking methods, like using real clay tandoors for that perfect char.
  • Dietary Inclusivity and Certification: It was important to find places that cater to everyone, specifically focusing on Halal-certified meats and diverse vegetarian menus. We also prioritized restaurants that could handle niche requests like Jain or Swaminarayan diets without a fuss.
  • Physical Comfort and Atmosphere: We assessed the actual dining environment, from the effectiveness of the air conditioning to the overall seating capacity for groups. A great meal can be dampened by a cramped space or a stuffy room, so we kept an eye on the logistics.
  • Hospitality and Service Speed: We looked at how well the staff handled the rush and if they made guests feel genuinely welcome. Our focus was on finding a balance between friendly, homey vibes and professional, efficient service delivery.

Walking through the winding, chaotic streets of the Old Quarter is a sensory overload in the best way possible, but sometimes the smell of phở just isn’t enough.

When you’re hit with a sudden, deep-seated craving for cumin, coriander, and buttery naan, you need to find the best Indian restaurant in Hanoi right away.

You’ll be glad to know that Hanoi actually has a surprisingly vibrant curry scene. I’ve actually spent many evenings chasing down the most authentic flavors in the city to help you skip the mediocre spots and dive straight into the good stuff.

My picks below have been praised by expats missing the taste of home, travelers needing a break from local noodles, and foodies on a spice hunt alike. Read on to discover them!

1. The TAJ Indian & Vegetarian Restaurant

Address: 71 Hang Buom Street, Hanoi Old Quarter

Contact: +84 8494 89 786 | [email protected]

Hours: Monday – Sunday, 11:00 AM – 12:00 AM

If you’re looking for a spot that is officially Halal-certified and run by chefs with nearly two decades of experience, this is your place. The TAJ Indian & Vegetarian Restaurant is a favorite for those who want authentic flavors that also appeal to the local palate.

Just a heads-up, though, the upstairs seating can get a bit sweltering because the air conditioning struggles with the open-air layout.

Also, the portions here are massive; easily enough to share with a friend if you aren’t feeling too greedy. On top of that, the hospitality is legendary, especially because of the manager, Mehtab, who greets everyone like an old friend.

I also appreciate their huge selection of plant-based dishes, which makes it a total win for vegetarians. But keep an eye on your bill, as they add a 3% service charge and VAT on top of the menu prices.

Pros

  • Halal-certified meats
  • Huge sharing portions
  • Experienced Indian chefs
  • Near Hoan Kiem Lake

Cons

  • Surcharges not on menu
  • Hot upstairs seating
  • Busy Old Quarter traffic

2. Namaste Hanoi

Address: 46 Tho Nhuom Street, Hoan Kiem District

Hours: Lunch Mon-Sun, 11:00 AM – 2:30 PM; Dinner Mon-Sun, 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM

Finding a place that covers everything from North Indian Mughlai curries to South Indian dosas is rare, but Namaste Hanoi manages to do it beautifully.

I particularly love that they use real clay tandoors to achieve that smoky, charred finish on their naan that you just can’t get in a regular oven.

Plus, they are completely Halal-focused, making it a reliable hub for travelers with specific dietary requirements. It’s a very spacious spot, so it’s great for groups who want to spread out.

If you’re feeling lazy, they even offer free delivery within the city so you can enjoy a feast in your hotel bed.

The only real bummer is the split operating hours, so you can’t just pop in for a late 3:00 PM lunch when the midday hunger hits.

And while the menu is truly massive (with over 200 items), some people find the barbecue seasoning a little heavy on salt.

Pros

  • Over 200 menu items
  • Authentic clay tandoor
  • Free local delivery
  • Large group seating

Cons

  • Closed mid-afternoon
  • Salty barbecue seasoning
  • Higher price point

Customer Reviews

What a wonderful restaurant. The food was very yummy and the quantity of them were very large, a nann was super big and maybe it would be better for 2 people. The lassi also tasty. The price was very good and reasonable. In general, this is a very good Indian restaurant. Must try.

I really like the food here. I’ve tried many Indian restaurants, and I have to say this one suits my taste the best. I usually order butter chicken and garlic naan. OH MY GOD!!!  they’re unbelievably delicious. The staff are very friendly and attentive 👍🏼. I’ve eaten here many times and have even brought my parents along, they loved it too. I highly recommend this place 😍🙂‍↕️

3. Indian Masala Restaurant

Address: 38b Bat Dan Street, Hanoi Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem District

Contact: 0327 635 985

Hours: Monday – Sunday, 11:00 AM – 11:00 PM

Indian Masala Restaurant stands out for offering “Desi Chinese” (Indo-Chinese) dishes that strike the perfect balance of garlic, heat, and soy. This is where you go for bold, uncompromising spices that haven’t been dialed back for the tourist crowd.

I once spoke to a regular here who swore their Jalamari was the best they’d had outside of India. However, the meat portions in chicken curries can sometimes feel a bit sparse compared to the gravy.

If you’re a fan of those heavy, rich sauces, you’ll be in heaven, but those looking for big chunks of protein might feel a little teased. Also, be prepared to wait about 25 minutes for the larger platters, as they take time to get things right in the kitchen.

On the bright side, they’re incredibly helpful for strict dietary needs, such as Jain or Swaminarayan diets. On top of that, the location is super convenient for anyone wandering the Old Quarter.

Pros

  • Authentic “Desi Chinese”
  • Accommodates Jain diets
  • Accepts card payments
  • Great Old Quarter vibe

Cons

  • Smaller meat portions
  • Slow platter service
  • Stretchy naan texture

Customer Reviews

One of the best Indian restaurant in Hà Nội. Food is very delicious and proper Indian taste. Owner is very friendly. Our everyday dinner was here only. Must visit place if you miss Indian food.

Absolutely fantastic restaurant! Best, most authentic chai I’ve had in South Asia (I asked for a second cup), incredible dal makhani (just the right combination of spicy and flavorful), really good raita (not just yoghurt but full of add ons), and delicious mutton biryani (hard to find here – it’s all chicken!). And the service – kind, cheery, attentive, and knowledgeable. The restaurant itself was elegant, spacious and clean. If you are looking for Indian food in Hanoi, this is the place!

4. Tadka Indian Restaurant Hanoi

Address: 26 Phung Hung Street, Hoan Kiem District

Contact: +84379585656 | [email protected]

Hours: Monday – Sunday, 10:30 AM – 10:45 PM

If you want a meal that feels like it came straight from a family kitchen, Tadka Indian Restaurant Hanoi is a solid bet.

Here, they use recipes passed down through generations and even import their premium spices directly from India to keep the flavors legit. You’ll find all the heavy hitters like dal makhani and butter chicken on the menu, and they all taste so fresh.

But because it’s a bit of a “cozy” (okay, small) space, it fills up fast, and finding parking for a bike or car nearby is basically an impossible mission. Just try to beat the 8:00 PM dinner rush if you don’t want to wait for a table.

Anyway, the vibe here is very clean and professional, with a major focus on hygiene that gives you a bit of peace of mind. Plus, the prices are very fair for the quality you’re getting, usually staying under 300,000 VND for a main dish.

Pros

  • Imported Indian spices
  • Family-taught recipes
  • Very clean facility
  • Friendly service team

Cons

  • Very limited parking
  • Cramped during rush
  • Potential table waits

Customer Reviews

The food is delicious. Very good Indian Restaurant and the service is top notch. Ate there multiple times during my stay in Hanoi. Spoon Hotel recommended us Tadka restaurant which is easily accessible and walkable from hotel. Loved the food and service.

What a fantastic place. The restaurant was full when we arrived around 8pm on a Monday but Sagar asked us to wait ten mins and in the end our rabie was ready after five minutes. Very VERY delicious food. We had dal makhani, mutton curry, butter chicken, paneer paratha, butter naan.

5. Hill Top Curry Indian Restaurant

Hours: Monday – Sunday, 11:00 AM – 11:30 PM

For those on a budget who still want a massive meal, Hill Top Curry is probably the most wallet-friendly spot in the district. If you’ve had enough of Italian restaurants and just want a cheap, spicy kick, this is it.

They’re famous for their 20,000 VND samosas and 89,000 VND chicken curry, which is almost unheard of for quality Indian food in this area.

I dropped by last week and was stuffed for less than the price of a fancy cocktail. But be warned, the service can be a little hit-or-miss. I actually had to grab my own menu while the staff was busy chatting.

So, don’t expect a fine dining restaurant experience, but do expect a plate overflowing with food. They even use organic ingredients and have a super-fast delivery service if you’re in a rush.

Also, their working air conditioning and Wi-Fi make it a great refuge from the Hanoi humidity.

Pros

  • Extremely low prices
  • Huge filling portions
  • Fresh organic ingredients
  • Strong air conditioning

Cons

  • Inattentive service
  • Small, noisy space
  • Crowded peak hours

Customer Reviews

Forgot to take a photo before we started eating but the food was phenomenal. The malai kofta was different than I’ve ever had before but so delicious and flavorful. Every single thing we got was amazing but the samosas were easily the best samosas I’ve ever had. Spicy and perfectly cooked with the sweet white sauce. We definitely left here full.

Honestly, it might have been the greatest meal I’ve ever had. We orderd three different chicken + sauce meals, 2 plates of naan, and one grilled charcoal. Everything was delicious, bread freshly baked, sauce very tastefull, chicken tender. The service was also great.
